A Chinese famille rose armorial coffee cup with the arms of Preston of Valleyfield House, Perth. The arms are attractive with the crest showing a unicorn head emerging from the Ducal coronet, and the arms being supported by two lions. The family motto ‘praesto ut praestem’ is on a scroll beneath. The border of the cup is decorated with flower festoons supported by ribbons. Height 6.5cm (2.5”). Qianlong c1760-70.
David Howard gives the information that Captain Robert Preston was managing owner of 30 East Indiamen at Canton between 1784 and 1802.
Condition: excellent undamaged condition.
