A good quality and attractive Chinese export plate decorated in famille verte overglaze enamels, and dating from the Kangxi period. The centre of the plate is painted with a garden scene with hens underneath a flowering tree from which is hanging a birdcage. There is a bonsai tree growing in a contained on a table in the background. The rim of the plate has a green band with stylised flowers and foliage, interspersed with panels of fish and scholar's objects (including a weiqi board, a ruyi sceptre and scrolls). The back of the plate is undecorated. There is an underglaze blue ding mark to the base. Plate diameter 22cm (8.7")
Date: Kangxi c1700-20
Condition: this plate is in very good condition. Minor roughness to the foot rim. There is a curious mark in the enamels near the rim where another object must have been placed on top of this plate while the enamels were freshly painted before firing, which has resulted in a narrow arc near the rim where the enamels have been picked up by the rim of the other object. This can be clearly seen in our photographs. No chips, cracks or restoration.
