A good quality and large Chinese octagonal charger with piecrust rim, dating from the Kangxi period. The centre of the charger is decorated in underglaze blue and gilding with a design of peony, lotus and chrysanthemum flowers and scrolling foliage. The rim is decorated with further flower heads and foliage. The dish is raised on a substantial foot and has 4 quickly-painted flower sprays beneath the rim. The centre of the dish has a lingzhi fungus mark within double underglaze blue circles. Diameter 43cm (16.9"), height 7cm (2.8").
Date: Kangxi c1710-20
Condition: there are two areas of professional restoration to the rim: a restored chip to one of the corners, and a restored short hairline crack. The restoration has been carefully donme and is not easily seen. There is significant fritting around the rim of the charger. There is a short firing crack in the interior of the dish which does not extend through the body. The gilding which was applied to the decoration is substantialy worn away. There is a little kiln dust adhering in the glaze of the base within the foot rim.
