A decorative Chinese silk panel from a red/orange Han-style wedding skirt dating from the last quarter of the 19th century. The panel is embroidered with a phoenix and other symbols in silk in seed stitch and satin stitch with gold metallic couched thread.  There are two of these larger panels on each skirt.  This panel is presented in a modern frame.

(area of visible fabric): 29cm x 16 cm (11.4 ” x 6.3 ”)
(frame): 48.5 cm x 35 cm (19” x 14”) 

Examples of Han-style skirts are shown in 'Threads of Gold: Chinese Textiles Ming to Ch’ing' by Paul Haig & Maria Shelton (Schiffer 2006).

Condition: The embroidery threads are in very good condition, while the red/orange silk background is somewhat faded, though still a good colour.
