A rare Chinese civilian Rank Badge with a paradise flycatcher of the lowest (9th) rank from the second half of the C19th from the front of a man's robe, the badge in two halves. The bird is very finely embroidered in cream and coloured silks and is appliquéd onto the background of ruyi clouds and bats ( a symbol of good fortune) and a sea with auspicious symbols, all embroidered in silk and gilt couched thread. The sun is also appliquéd in gilt and couched red thread. The badge has a border of bats and shou symbols (also for good luck). Appliquéd emblems were sometimes used so that they could easily be replaced following a promotion, or the wearer could have bought a readymade badge base and the bird separately. Mounted on card.
9th rank badges are rare because officials generally got promoted in due course, so the emblem would be replaced with one for a higher rank or a new badge commissioned.
Size: Badge: 30 cm h x 31 cm w. Mount: approx. 50cm x 50cm
Condition : Very good. There are a few losses to the silk on the body of the bird and the outer gold border threads. Please see photographs.
