An early C20th set of 2 panels of Chinese silk appliqués with birds

Code: 260512

SOLD

A delightful set of 2 panels of  Chinese silk appliqués of birds, paeonies, butterflies and bats, probably from the early C20th, on their original paper backing.  Fine satin stitch with gilt metal couching. Bats symbolise happiness and longevity, paeonies wealth and butterflies joy and happiness in marriage. These would possibly have been sold by itinerant pedlars for sewing on to garments for those who lacked the wherewithal to carry out or commission their own embroidery.

Size: embroidery sections each c. 41c x 8cm.

Condition excellent. Some spotting and discolouration to paper backing. Please see photographs.
