A Chinese baluster vase, imported to Europe as an underglaze blue example, and with iron red and gilt decoration added in Europe. The underglaze blue decoration shows a deer underneath a pine tree, with a lingzhi fungus growing from it, and with a crane flying overhead. An attractive example. Height 13cm (5.2”). The vase Kangxi c1700.
Pine, deer, cranes and lingzhi fungus are all emblematic of longevity and good fortune.
From the collection of Bernard Watney, and with his collection label on the base.
Condition: the neck of the vase has been restored. The overspraying of the neck makes it difficult to determine what has been restored, but it appears that a number of rim chips have been restored. The original lid is missing.
