A Chinese export coffee cup and saucer, originally decorated in underglaze blue with a floral design and dating from the Yongzheng period (1723-1735). Both the cup and saucer have been decorated over the glaze in England (probably in London)with a vigorous design of white flower heads against black swirls, and green and gilt flowers. The decoration is likely to have been added not long after this cup and saucer were imported into England. Saucer diameter 11.7cm (4.6")
This cup and saucer set come from the collection of Helen Espir, author of the most complete reference to European-decorated Oriental porcelain.
Condition. There is a crack to the handle of the coffee cup (please see our images). No other damage and no restoration. The applied enamels are in good condition, although there is a little rubbing to the gilding.
