Small Chinese Kraak dish, Wanli

SOLD

Code: 211002

A small Chinese Kraak dish or saucer, decorated in underglaze blue and dating from the late Ming period.  The dish is typically decorated with a central scene of a bird on a rock among flowers and foliage. The rim is decorated in panels with ‘sunflowers’ divided by simple narrow panels of dots.  The reverse of the dish has further decoration in panels. The foot is neatly formed.  Diameter 13.7cm (5.4”)

This small dish is of Border V type in Rinaldi’s classification of kraak wares. She notes that this unusually small shape is quite unusual, but dishes of this size were found in the Witte Leeuw (c1613). This dish is not a shipwreck item, however.

An attractive Kraak dish in an unusual small size.

Dating: Wanli c 1573-1619

Condition:

This dish is in excellent, undamaged, condition with no chips, cracks or restoration.
