An attractive Chinese export tankard of a good size, dating from the Kangxi period. This was imported into Europe as a blue and white item, and decoration in overglaze red and green enamels has been added in Holland (Amsterdams Bont decoration). The underglaze blue decoration is of two large birds amidst rockwork and flowers. The Dutch decorators have added further colourful birds, flowers and foliage. Height of tankard 13cm (5.1”)
This is a good example of sympathetic decoration in Holland which adds to, but does not obscure, the original underglaze blue decoration.
The tankard Kangxi period c 1700-1722, the enamels added at the same period.
This tankard is in excellent condition. There is a firing crack in the base of the tankard, more visible from the inside but faintly visible on the base. There is an area of fritting to the glaze of the handle, and a small area of fritting to the bottom rim of the tankard (see images). The Dutch gilding has rubbed substantially away in many places. The other enamels are in good condition as can be appreciated from the photographs.
