A Chinese export (Cantonese) folding paper fan with black lacquered wooden sticks, embellished with gold paint showing a garden scene, and a paper leaf. The back and front of each leaf have a blue background and are painted with many ivory-faced figures indoors and in a balustraded garden. Length of guard sticks: 28.7 cm (excluding pivot pin) (11.3”)
These fans were brought back from China by Westerners as souvenirs in the late 19th and early 20th century.
Date: second half of the Noneteenth Century
Condition: the wooden sticks are in excellent condition. There are a number of splits to the paper along the folds. No box.
