A Chinese export cream jug with grisaille European scene, Qianlong

Code: 251106

A Chinese export cream jug with grisaille decoration and with a gilt flower and leaf scroll decoration around the rim. The decoration shows a finely-dressed standing figure holding a branch of coral next to a crouching boy who in turn is holding an animal by a chain. The continuous scene also has two Chinese vases, one containing more coral, peacock feathers and linghzhi fungus and further round what appears to be a large European tankard. A most curious scene.  Height 9cm (3.5")

A grisaille teabowl & saucer with this design is included as item 62 in the Jorge Welsh publication 'European Scenes on Chinese Art' where they are dated to the Yongzheng period c1735.  A famille rose plate with this design is shown as figure 5.8 in Hervouet & Bruneau's book 'La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes a decor Occidental'.

Date: Qianlong c1750

Condition. This cream jug is in good condition.  There is a short firing crack at the rim, less visible from the outside. The black enamelling is in very good condition. There is some rubbing and loss to the gilt decoration around the body of the jug. The lid is missing.
