A Chinese dish with moulded rim, decorated in underglaze blue, and dating from the late Ming period. The centre of the dish is painted with two deer in a landscape with pine trees and decorative rockwork. The rim of the dish is moulded with two rows of petals, each with a simple thick blue line decoration. The reverse of the dish is decorated with a row of 'flames' around the foot. Diameter 20.5cm (8.1")
A similar dish is shown on page 157 in the book 'Ko-Sometsuke' by Kawahara, Published by Kyoto Shoin Co., Ltd., Japan, 1977.
Condition: this dish is in very good condition. There is a short (~1cm) firing crack at the rim on the front of the plate which des not extend through to the back. There is a small amount of kiln grit adhering in the glaze, and the glaze on the base shows 'pinholing' caused during firing. There is a small amount of minor glaze fritting at the rim.
