A good Chinese export coffee cup & saucer with Meissen style design

SOLD

Code: 270602

A good quality Chinese export coffee cup and saucer finely decorated in Meissen style with famille rose overglaze enamels and gilding, and dating from the early Qianlong period. The saucer is particularly finely potted and translucent.  Both the cup and saucer have an elaborate gilt border within which there is a red, purple and guilt cartouche containing a finally painted European scene in the style of Meissen porcelain from around 1735. The scenes on the coffee cup and saucer are different but in all other regards the decoration is the same. Saucer diameter is 11.6 cm, height is 5.9 cm.

A variety of European scenes were used for these wares, probably copied from Meissen ceramics.  A Chinese plate and a bowl with similar central scene to that on the saucer are shown in Hervouet & Bruneau's book 'La Porcelaine des Comapgnies des Indes a Decor Occidental' as figures 16.16 and 15.17

Provenance: Previously sold at Christie's Paris, 11th December 2013 as part of Lot 9, from the collection of Jacques and Galila Hollander, Belgium.

Date: early Qianlong circa 1740

Condition: both the cup and saucer are in very good condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. As can be appreciated from our photographs the enamels are in very good condition. There is some light rubbing to the gilding around the rims.
