A good London decorated lobed Chinese export saucer dish, Qianlong

A good quality London-decorated lobed Chinese export saucer dish with moulded and incised petal decoration to the saucer. The London decoration, probably added in the workshop of James Giles, is of flower sprays with roses, tulips and other flowers and a butterfly or moth. Diameter 15.3 cm (6")

This style of London decoration with its round-shaped roses and rounded petals to the tulips is classified as 'Type B' Giles decoration.

Geoffrey Godden has made the interesting observation that, whereas English porcelain of the mid C18th often had chinoiserie decoration, Chinese porcelain decorated in London was frequently decorated in an European style.

Provenance: paper label to the base. This saucer dish was shown in the Stockspring Antiques exhibition of Early James Giles (part of the exhibition item number 54) where it is described as the stand for a sugar bowl.  What appears to be this dish was included as part of the sale of The Godden Collection of English-decorated Chinese Porcelain at Bonhams London salerooms on 20th May 2015 as part of lot 40.

Date: Qianlong circa 1755 to 1765

Condition there is a shallow chip behind the rim of  around 4 mm. No other damage and no restoration.
