A Chinese export famille rose armorial coffee cup, Qianlong

SOLD

Code: 280104

A striking Chinese export famille rose armorial coffee cup, dating from the early Qianlong period.  The cup is decorated in famille rose enamels and gilding with a crest of a flaming salamander with a coronet around its neck.  There is a diaper band around the neck with panels of grisaille flowerheads, and with a gilt arrow border beneath.  Sprays of flowers and fruit have been painted on either side of the handle.  Height of cup 6.5 cm (2.6")

An identical coffee cup is illustrated on p161 in the book 'Chinese Armorial Porcelain' volume II by David Howard.  A salamander crest was used by several families and, in the absence of the full arms, the author was unable to identify which specific family this crest belongs to.

Date: early Qianlong c 1740-45

Condition:   This cup is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or restoration.  As can be appreciated from our photographs, the enamels and gilding  are also in good condition.
